Through PBL, IIHS students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Students work over an extended period of time on a project that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. Team-based PBL projects allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a product or presentation for a real audience. Some examples of topics covered are “poverty problems in urban areas” and “the roles of space in literature, social science theories, and other academic fields”.
IIHS students read, discuss, and write about great lasting literature. Teachers provide a list of thought-provoking classics, and each student chooses their own book(s) to read. The School opens special lectures for the program. Each lecture consists of twelve sessions. Students read their choices and submit their book reports before the lectures begin. In each lecture, students discuss the books with their peers and teachers. After the lectures end, students write baccalaureate-style essays.
Six public international and global high schools gather each year for the Joint Academy Conference to share their opinions on selected topics. “Post-Pandemic Societies” was this year's topic. The six participatory schools take turns hosting the event. Unique student representatives of the host school prepare a presentation about the given topic and share it with the other participants. The Incheon Specialized High Schools' Joint Academy Conference involves student representatives from five top high schools in Incheon publishing a collection of papers that deeply probe and examine a given topic.
All IIHS students take a research method course in their first school year. While taking the course, each student finds their research interest and conducts individual research under the supervision of teachers with advanced degrees over a year. Students publish their research papers at the completion of the program. The program aims to grant students experience with research-driven writing while also functioning as a writing workshop to improve their scholarly writing ability.
